Acrylic PVA

Acrylic PVA paint is an emulsion paint that is made from Polyvinyl acetate (PVA), which is a rubbery synthetic polymer. The qualities of PVA are such that it makes an excellent interior and exterior paint that has excellent hiding power. This is a low gloss paint with little odour that only requires one coat on many surfaces. Water based acrylic PVA paints first came on to the market in the 1950s when they were marketed as ‘Latex’ house paints (even though they contained no latex). Today the very best exterior water-based paints are 100% acrylic. Advantages of these paints are that they:

  • Have excellent adhesion properties
  • They are water based, so brushes and rollers can be cleaned with water and soap followed by thorough rinsing with clean water
  • Most surfaces only require one application
  • It is easy to apply an over coat

When using acrylic PVA paints the surfaces should first be cleaned from oil, dust or any other contaminants. Fill any holes or defects first with an appropriate filler such as Polyfiller. Depending on the substrate a primer or sealer may be used first if necessary.

Surfaces that have been painted with acrylic PVA paints are easy to clean - just wash with an ordinary household cleaner or with a soft soap solution by using a soft cloth and the surface will be restored to its original spotless condition. Before applying acrylic PVA paints they should be thoroughly stirred. Be careful not to apply too thickly – this paint is easy to apply. The paint is usually available in 1, 5 and 20 litre containers. Allow between 10 m² and 12m² to the litre.
