Floor painting

One of the first things that comes to mind when mentioning floor painting is that whatever or wherever, a floor paint has to be hard wearing. When we consider the environment that we live in it is fairly obvious that floors are subject to a lot of abuse, whether they be the floors in one’s house, which are constantly walked upon, or the garage where they may be subject to spills of petrol, oil and so on, or, of course, industrial floors, which are frequently the subject of abuse from corrosive chemicals or heavy traffic. For those floors that are made out of concrete this can be a big problem – concrete is subject to massive deterioration when subjected to corrosive chemicals, and a protective coating is a must when the two are forced together. Concrete is also subject to water penetration, which causes mould or mildew, and if these circumstances are foreseen it is desirable to coat the concrete with a waterproof layer.

Without doubt the best choice of material for floor painting is an epoxy based paint, and this is the first choice of most professional garage and basement floor coating specialists and industrial floor painting installation professionals. Both professionals and DIY experts have used traditional epoxy floor paints for concrete and cement floors for many years. The traditional paints have met the requirements regarding both chemical and water resistance as well as having excellent bonding qualities and durability. The traditional two-part floor paints are clumsy to work with and have a relatively short life, making it necessary to have frequent floor re-painting.

Today’s epoxy paints, though, have retained all of the good properties of the older traditional paints, but have also answered many of the older floor paints’ unwanted properties. The new floor painting materials have excellent bonding properties, they are water resistant and stand up to the strongest of corrosive chemicals, and can stand up to an ambient temperature of 200ºC. They are elastic, colour-fast and are resistant to ultra-violet radiation. These floor paints have been tested for shock resistance and can take a blow of up to 500 lbs/square inch. What is more they can be applied to a concrete floor in just a single coat. Gone are the old rusty-red colours of yesterday’s floor paints as they are replaced by a rainbow of colours.

Today’s epoxy floor paints can be specifically chosen for particular applications. For example, you may not need a water resistant coating for a particular job, or you may specifically want a coating that is resistant to a particular chemical. You may want a coating that offers a non-slip surface. There are specific non-slip epoxy paints for walkways, wooden decks and marine surfaces, another paint for indoor sports surfaces and yet another for outdoor surfaces. There are also specific paints, sealants and stains for wooden floors and decks.

There is a floor paint for just about any application you can think of. The problem comes in chosing which coating is the correct one for the application that you have in mind. That is where Kings Paint comes in. Our experts are there to assist you in making the correct decision.
