Best Paint

One of the things you are going to have to know if you are contemplating redecorating your home is which are the best paints to use. Paints that are used for house painting fall into two categories, so choosing the best one to use is not that difficult a decision. The two types of paint that can be found on the market are oil based paints and water based paints, and the best one to use depends entirely what job you are going to use them for. Generally speaking oil based paints are gloss paints and are best used for doors, trim, high traffic areas, bathrooms and kitchens. Water based paints, which otherwise go by the names PVA, acrylic or Latex, are best used for walls and ceilings.

You will find that the best oil based paint is more difficult to work with than water based paint. This is mostly because it is thicker and it requires different types of brushes and rollers than water based. When using oil based paints it is best to ensure that the area you are working in is well ventilated – this is because oil paints have a very strong smell and the fumes can be a problem to one’s lungs. The best oil based paint is available at all of Kings Paint stores and they can easily be tinted to just about any colour. Remember one thing, but an important one. If you are using an oil based paint it is best to prime the area you are going to paint beforehand. If you don’t prime the area first there is a good chance that, once applied and dried, there is a good chance of it peeling. This will also happen if the base coat is also oil based. Do remember that it is best to thoroughly clean the area to be painted before you prime it, otherwise you can have problems with the paint sticking. You can buy your primer at Kings Paint and Hardware and it can be applied with a brush, roller or spray gun. When you’re painting highly contrasted colours (e.g. a dark colour over a light colour or vice versa) it’s best to have the primer tinted beforehand.

There are, of course, other applications for paints than domestic applications – there are numerous different industrial applications and there is usually a best paint for each application. For example, industrial paints are manufactured to meet a wide variety of needs, including:

  • Floor and concrete coatings
  • Marine paints – from yachts to aircraft carriers
  • Space and Aviation specifications
  • Automotive coatings
  • Machinery
  • Swimming pool paints

The types of paint coatings that these various applications need will determine the best paint for the job. The various coatings are

  • Industrial clear coating
  • High temperature coating
  • Non-skid coating
  • Rust preventative coatings
  • Aluminium, zinc and fibreglass primers
  • Anti graffiti coating
  • Salt water resistant coatings
  • Rust preventative paint

Oil based paint often will bubble during the painting process. Be sure that you don’t shake this paint, but rather stir it. It’s also best if you try to use just one coat when using oil based. This type of paint takes longer to dry than latex paint does, so keep that in mind. Make sure you allow enough ventilation to speed up the process.

It’s vital to remember that oil based paint, is considered toxic and hazardous waste. Caution should be used when disposing of it.

There are many projects that are best suited for oil paint.

For instance trim such as window trim, crown molding, bead board, or trim around doors is best done with oil paint. The reason is that this type of paint is much more durable and can take more wear and tear than latex can. As an added benefit, it’s much easier to clean than latex.

As well, if you’re painting a door you’ll want to consider using oil. Again, being that it’s easier to clean, things like smudges, fingerprints, and dirt in general will be much easier to clean off.

You may also find that some exterior projects can use oil paint such as trim around windows and doors. Other things such as metal take well to oil, but be sure never to use it on iron or fresh masonry without properly preparing and priming.

For the most part, oil based paints are effective for much of your home, and though a little more tedious to apply makes life afterwards much easier.
